Pax vaporizer by Ploom is a 100% portable conduction vaporizer designed to vaporize dry blends while you’re on the go. With a slick design reminiscent of an ordinary lighter, only larger, this pocket-ready portable has taken the world of vaporizers by storm. Three temperature presets which range as high as 410°F, no cords, a rechargeable internal lithium-ion battery capable of producing vapor for up to 2 hours with a mere 30-40 second heat up time, an incredibly easy to use design which takes advantage of motion activated commands, and a compact yet durable exterior are just some of the factors that we took into consideration before awarding this hand-held the highest rating we have ever awarded a portable. If you’re looking to buy Pax, we suggest you pick yours up from the same place we acquired ours: this store. Not only do they carry Pax in all four colors — black, purple, green, and blue — they’re also an authorized distributor so you can rest assured in knowing that your purchase will be covered by a 10-year manufacturer’s warranty. Pax Temperature Spectrum

With a total of three temperatures spanning across a range as low as 370°F and as high as 410°F, selecting the right temperature is no more troublesome than pressing a button. In order to cycle through the temperatures, remove the mouthpiece and press the glowing button. The status light on the outside will change colors as you press the button, indicating which temperature setting you’re on. When the lowest temperature setting is selected, the light will glow yellow. The medium temperature is orange and the highest is red. Here’s how the colors and temperatures match up:

370°FLow – Yellow

390°FMedium – Orange

410°FHigh – Red

Weight, Size, & Power

Weighing less than one pound and measuring 4-1/8″ x 1.4″ x 7/8″ translates into you probably not noticing Pax while it’s resting in your pocket. The internal battery is a rechargeable lithium-ion. The battery is not intended to be replaced by users. Currently, replacement batteries do not exist, however, this is certainly subject to change over time.

How To Use Pax

This loose-leaf vaporizing device is fairly straight forward when it comes to usage. To load your blend, remove the lid to the filling chamber. The chamber is located on the bottom of the unit. To remove the lid, press down on either end so that the other end begins to protrude and then grab the end that’s popping out and pull it away. It’s held snug by a magnetic so don’t worry about breaking it. Next, grind your dry blend and load it into the oven. Once loaded, replace the magnetic lid. To activate, press down gently upon the mouthpiece until it clicks and protrudes. Once it pops out, the star-shaped indicator will begin to glow magenta. While the light is glowing purple, the heating element is in the process of reaching the desired vaporizing temperature. Once the light turns green, begin drawing vapor as it’s ready for use. Click the mouthpiece back in to turn it off when you’re done. Adjusting the temperature is as easy as pressing a button. While off, click the mouthpiece in so that it pops out and the unit begins to heat up. Next, grab the mouthpiece and pull it away from the device in order to remove it entirely. Inside you will see a white light glowing. That light is actually the button that you will press to cycle through the three temperatures. As you press it, you will notice the star light on the outside change color. The three colors correlate with the three temperature presets. Yellow is low, orange is medium, and red is high. Pax uses a quick temperature recall feature that remembers the last setting used and automatically begins heating up to that temperature when the unit is turned on.

Construction

These botanical vaporizers by San Francisco’s Ploom company are constructed with durable aluminum exteriors. The aluminum is anodized in either black, green, blue, or purple. All of the plastic components are made from food-safe plastics. The pathway which vapor travels through is made from medical-grade stainless steel. While we mentioned plastics in the construction, there’s no need to be concerned about any distortions in aroma or taste, as the vapor they produce is excellent. Motion sensor technology is incorporated into every unit in order to enhance usability through motion activated commands; well demonstrated by a gentle shaking of the device to check the status of the battery. To some, the construction is reminiscent of various Apple products such as the iPad, iPhone, and even the MacBook.

How To Clean Pax Vaporizer

Overview & Problems – Cleaning regularly is a necessity when it comes to Ploom Pax, as proper cleaning on a regular basis will help ensure that the unit continues to function without flaw. Without regular cleaning, a number of issues can and likely will arise with continued use. In order to avoid these problems, a thorough cleaning is required every so often. How often depends upon the rate of usage, however, we prefer to clean ours once every couple of days. If your mouthpiece doesn’t pop right out and instead slides out very slowly or not at all, it’s time to clean. If your mouthpiece pops out, but, the device does not begin to heat up, you are likely in need of a cleaning. Ideally, you want to clean it before you notice any sticky residues beginning to inhibit normal functionality. Now that we’ve covered some of the known issues, let’s get into the resolution.

Cleaning Process – To clean these little gizmos, Ploom provides a cleaning kit which contains some wipes and long brushes which are intended to be used in combination with one another to clean the inside of the mouthpiece and down through the vapor pathway which travels through the length of the device. While you could use their kit, we don’t suggest it. At VapeForest.com, we prefer to use our own blend of cleaning supplies compiled from ordinary items one might find in their home. For starters, we use isopropyl rubbing alcohol instead of the wipes. While the wipes are fine, they don’t provide us with an adequate amount of liquid to really get the job done. For this reason, we choose to use a bottle of rubbing alcohol instead. Next, we’ve got a small wire-thin brush with plastic bristles. The stiff bristles don’t come off inside of the vapor pathway while cleaning, which is more than we can say for the cleaning sticks the manufacturer provides; though, we applaud them for the effort. For a brush, we use an interdental cleaning brush. They’re relatively inexpensive, easy to acquire, and capable of cleaning the area which connects to the mouthpiece. That particular area is the culprit behind the aforementioned issues with functionality. To clean it, start at the oven end and pour a generous serving of isopropyl alcohol down through the vapor path while holding the unit upside down. Leeching the system in this fashion helps remove any residues which have built up from use. If you do decide to pour a cleaning solution through, be careful to avoid coming into contact with the temperature button, as it may cease to function. For this reason, pouring rubbing alcohol through the unit is not a technique which we recommend. After dipping your brush in the rubbing alcohol, use it to clean down in and around the sides of the area where the mouthpiece connects. Repeat this process until the unit has been thoroughly cleaned. Ensure that the unit is completely dry before using. We prefer to run a dry heating cycle (no blend inserted) after ever cleaning. After which point, the cleaning process is complete.

Pax Warranty

When Pax is purchased through an authorized distributor, the manufacturer warranties the device for 10 years. Ploom, Inc.’s warranty covers defects in workmanship and materials for ten years from the date of retail purchase. It’s limited to the original end-user who purchased it retail and is restricted to normal use. The warranty does not cover “normal performance degradation” of batteries or units which have not been cleaned as instructed by the manufacturer. Addressing physical defects that are claimed within the warranty period, Ploom will either exchange it for a functionally equivalent product, refund the purchase price, or repair the defect. At the time of writing, this warranty does not apply to Europe, as Pax is only available for purchase in Canada and the United States, however, all of this is subject to change without or knowing so make sure you visit the manufacturer’s website for current information regarding warranty coverage, exclusions, and limitations. Also, take into consideration that you may have additional rights due to the laws in your area.

  1. Ploom has resolved issues with the Pax mouthpiece sticking by including a packet of lubricant with every purchase. To apply, simply open the packet and squeeze a small droplet into the metal side of the mouthpiece tube, use a second drop of lube to lubricate the outside of the metal tube, replace the mouthpiece, and then press/click it in and out a few times for even distribution.

  2. Pax vaporizer made me switch from smoking to just vaping.

  3. Very very helpful. Thanks!

  4. Ploom has announced the release of their “Emerald” Green Pax! Green models will begin to ship June 3, 2013.

  5. The toughest thing for me was to spend that chunk of money. Once I got a Pax, I never looked back. I love this thing. How its built, to its style to its functionality. I really enjoy my new and firstly owned vape. I had some hotness with the mouth piece but soon realized the oven wasn’t full enough, that issue is resolved. Also, sometimes it will turn colors while in use. Not sure if it affects the pull. Haven’t noticed its shutting off because it thinks it’s in lock mode. That is what I have read. Overall, a solid purchase.

  6. I just purchased a Pax and I really enjoy it. I love that it doesn’t look like a vaporizer. It’s strong, it’s worth the money. Do yourself a favor and get one.

  7. I purchased the PAX solely on your recommendation of it. I purchased another vape a few years ago and wish I had read your review before doing so. The PAX has renewed my faith in vaping!

  8. I love my Pax vaporizer. It blows wicked clouds and a lot healthier than combustion. Not to mention that its better for my wallet too.
